Palliative Care Elective Rotation Instructions
Welcome to your two-week Palliative Care elective rotation. Below you will find important details to help you prepare and make the most of your experience with our team.
Attendance & Scheduling
- Team Rounds
- Start daily at 8:30 AM via Zoom.
- Please plan to join every day, from any
- On your first day, arrive at the Mason F. Lord Building, Center Tower, Suite #2300 by 8:00 am (To be settled in time for rounds)
- Workspace available: GIM Small Collaborative Workspace.
- Note: No patient visits are required before rounds on the first day.
- Time Away Requests
- Inform us of any required clinic time or dates/times you will be away from the
- Any requests outside of program requirements must be approved by both:
- Dr. Aparna Desai, Site Director, JHBMC Palliative Clerkship and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship
- Your Program Director
- Noon Conference
- You are excused from attending unless there are no scheduled palliative care clinical or didactic
Orientation & Learning Opportunities
- First Day Orientation
- Following rounds, you will meet with Dr. Desai. This meeting will cover rotation goals and orientation.
Objectives
By end of your rotation, our goals for you are:
- Understand and be able to explain to patients the basics of hospice and palliative care
- To learn and apply a narrative communication model for family meetings
- To gain familiarity with advanced symptom management
- To understand the roles of the interdisciplinary team members and how they work collaboratively and effectively together

Educational Sessions
- You will be scheduled to meet with:
- Olivia Berger, PharmD (Pharmacist)
- Matthew Jacobson (Chaplain)
- Sessions include education and shadowing
Preparation
- Rotation Documents
- Please review all emailed rotation documents before your start date.
- Keep them available for reference throughout the rotation.
